Now Meta owned WhatsApp tries to make competition with MS Teams and Zoom with its latest feature of having ability to share screen over the video call. We can say it is little bit late as the service provider like Zoom achieve another level of popularity in Covid-19 times but I believe we are not expecting this much functionality. WhatsApp is already very commonly used in all the smartphones but this feature will be managed to bound the audience to a great extent as this feature can be helpful in various tasks like sharing documents for work, showcase presentation, showing parents about how to perform anything in smartphone from distant place easily. These are some basic highlights in Meta’s press release.

As of now, the company is focusing on releasing the feature gradually in beta version on Android, iOS and Windows. At the time of video calls, there will be a Share button which can seen at the bottom of the screen to use the said feature. Regarding its restriction, audio will not be available to other side while sharing the screen for application like Youtube.

There are some very easy steps to utilize the WhatsApp Screen Share feature:

  • Begin with a video call with your selected contact or it can be a group of trusted people.
  • Once the contact or group available on the video chat, you must find a screen share icon at the bottom of the screen. When you ready to share screen just tap on it.
  • This will lead to display a pop-up box indicating that you have chosen to share the screen and start recording or casting using WhatsApp.
  • Tap “Start now” to launch the screen sharing.
  • To end screen sharing, you can click on “Stop Sharing.”

As you can realize from the above steps, you can get full control of sharing your mobile screen with others. Before start the screen share, WhatsApp will ask for your permission and it can be ended by you anytime it requires. In the whole process, there are some risks are also associated like WhatsApp feature will have access to all the data displayed on your screen. There is some kind of threat to your privacy and exposure to your sensitive information. Like another features of WhatsApp this is also protected with end-to-end encryption.  I think company will also know types of risk and will provide another set of updates to resolve these.
